Mike Brown Leads Outdoor Series Points

Posted by: Cropley | Tuesday, May 31, 2005

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, I know Mike Brown had a good one while at the High Point national Sunday even after a less than satisfying seventh place finish in the first 125 moto. Determined, Brownie fought hard in the second moto and battled up front with Alessi for most of the race to finally make the pass for the lead with a couple laps to go. Brown held on for the moto win and third overall which puts him in first place for the championship points.

Chad Reed had a solid fourth place finish in his 250 moto 1 and in moto 2 he got a huge holeshot but fell in the first corner. Chad ended up finishing moto 2 in eighth place and sixth overall for the day.

Metal Mulisha On Viva La Bam!

Posted by: Cropley | Thursday, May 26, 2005

Deegan, Faisst, Manley, Scummy and Potter just got back from filming an episode of Viva La Bam last week and from the looks of the photos it should be the best show ever. They say a picture is worth a thousand words…well these photos are worth at least a million, so I’ll shut up now and you can just check out the photo gallery for yourself.

Check back for info on when the show will air on MTV.

The fact that someone has access to crash test dummies and then put etnies on them is fascinating to me.
How random...not cows or horses mating...but friggin llamas? Brilliant!

Three of these photos are gonna earn some people free etnies!...We have narrowed it down from hundreds of entries and these are the cream of the crop. I might just be nice and throw in some honorable mentions once the winners are annouced, but for now, see for yourself what we have to work with here. If you think you could have done better than this, then it is your own damn fault for not entering. Remember folks, the entires had to have a visable, legible pair of etnies in them. We had some funny entries that didn't meet that requirement and, as a result, were purged. Pay attention next time fools!

Just flat-out ridiculous.

Pet cooperation is impressive.
Is this people reaching for etnies shoes that are being tossed to them or an etnies shoe invasion from outer space?

This is the "artistic" entry. Let's look at it and think deep thoughts.

Before you read this look to your left. See that yellow little square? Good, click it and listen to some tunes from our new music player while checking out the site. Now you may read on...

This weekend marks the second round of the outdoor motocross season at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA. Reed got knocked a little silly before last weeks Hangtown Classic and wasn’t quite 100 percent, but this weekend look for a clear headed Chad Reed to lay the smack down on the rest of ‘em, especially RC!

Make sure to tune in and listen to the live webcast on Sunday, May 29 starting at 12:30pm ET and 9:30am PT.

Also the opening round from Hangtown will be on OLN this Saturday, May 28 at 3pm ET. Watch it!

Baja 500 Pre-Fun!

Posted by: Cropley | Wednesday, May 25, 2005
Pistol Pete's new 3 seat Speedway pre-runner.

Dirt is dirt, and if you like dirt then you probably like most dirt sports. Most people checking this out probably like motocross. Riding dirt bikes is all about having fun, going fast and catching some air. Right? Off-road racing, though it will never be as fun as riding motos, is pretty much the same deal. Trophy trucks get going 120+ mph through some of the roughest terrain in the world and they definitely catch air. Those two things alone make it fun, but add the whole team and racing atmosphere and it makes it cool for those who are not even in the truck. Watching 750 horse power truck fly over a jump at 80mph and land 120 ft away is pretty freakin’ sweet.

I went to my first race a few years ago at the SCORE San Felipe 250 and I was hooked. Since then I have been to just about every SCORE race that our Desert Assassins team has entered and many of the pre-runs that we do weeks before the actual race to get a feel for the course and mark the GPS with skull & crossbones.

The pre-run, or as we like to call it “pre-fun”, is in its own way the best part of off-road racing. Yeah, the rush of racing in a 750 horse power trophy truck bumper to bumper at 100mph + through the middle of Baja is unreal and like none other, but while pre-running you get to experience the real Baja at your own pace with good friends, cold beer and none of the pressure or stress that comes on race day.

Santo Tomas is the home of the best road sign everrrr! Bean digs it.

Last weekend, a small portion of our team, led by TV dork and trophy truck driver Cameron Steele, loaded up the trailers and crew cabs and made the trip south to Ensenada to pre-run for the upcoming Baja 500. This is how it went...

We got settled in at the Villa Marina Hotel in Ensenada early enough Friday night to go out and tear up the town a bit. Well 5:30am finally rolled around and getting out of bed was a struggle but I made it to the trucks and we were on the road. Highway 3 took us out of the smoggy and smelly ghetto of Ensenada to the fresh air and beauty of the Baja desert. We got on the race course at Ojos Negros at about race mile 34 and began the pre-fun. The windy rain rutted roads led us down to Santo Tomas, a small town where the crew stopped and ate some breakfast, screwed around and worked a little on the cars.

Next the course took us down towards the coast and by that time it was easily 90 degrees inland, so the cool pacific breeze was a relief. I was in the lead 4 seater so I had time to stop and snap some photos while waiting for the others to catch up. The beaches down here are amazing compared to anything you will ever find in So-Cal. The party train headed back inland towards Valle de Trinidad and made its way up to Simpson Trail and all the time stopping to hang out and enjoy a beer or snack. Simpson’s is a 1000 ft. climb up a rocky mountain that you wouldn’t even think to walk up, it is that nasty. All of our cars made it up, but J-Gun's Ford Ranger of had to go back because of a Bronco that was stuck in the middle holding up traffic. It was getting close to dark and we had already pre-run about 150 miles so we found the road that cut to the other side of the course to Mike’s Sky Rancho. Mike’s is a relatively nice hotel with a pool and bar, but it’s in the middle of f-ing nowhere. It was awesome; we had a kick-ass dinner, drank some margaritas, took a dip in the pool and just camped out in the dirt.

We left early from Mike’s because the plan was to finish the remainder of the course early enough to get back to Ensenada and party (at least that was my plan). Next we finished the southern loop of the race course which is really rough and tight. Took highway 3 back up through Valley T and made our way up to the pine wood forest and down to Tres Hermanos. The rules didn't allow us to go right and pre-run up the course from Tres Hermanos to the finish because of oncoming pre-run traffic so we went left and took another look at the section between Tres Hermanos and Uruapan and then took highway 1 north back to E-Town.

After 2 days playing in the dirt it was right back to business in town. All the old guys had to rub toes with their ladies so that night Slarf, Bean, Squirly, the Littler One, Azam and I went to every club, shady bar and taco stand we could find and went nuts. It gets a little blurry after Papas and Beer but reportedly we stumbled into the room at about 5am and woke everyone up. Needless to say we didn’t get up to pre-run in the morning. Once we finally woke up we got some breakfast/lunch tacos and talked this guy into selling us four pair of “authentic” Oakley Blades for 15 dollars, the deal of a life time. After that we just cruzed around town but people kept telling us to “Slow down!” I didn’t realize how fast and athletic those blades made us look. I’ve never pulled so many chicks in my life!

The entire trip was bad-ass! We got to see the whole course, camp out in the dirt and party like Mexican rock stars. I can’t wait to go back down next week for the actual race and see our Desert Assassins/etnies #16 Trophy Truck take the over-all! Check back for my race report and photos of the Baja 500.

Hangtown Results

Posted by: Cropley | Monday, May 23, 2005

The opening round of the AMA motocross season was this weekend at Hangtown and all the big dogs came out to see where the stand. On top was RC going 1-1 and second was Chad Reed putting in a solid 3-3 ride for second overall. Amazing considering Reed got knocked a little silly in practice the morning of the race. Look for some good battles in the top three next week at High Point in Mt. Morris, PA. By then Reed’s head will be clear and he will be ready to hang it all out for 45min. + 2 and give RC and Bubba a run for their money and the championship. It’s on!

In the 125/250F class Grant Langston pulled off the overall win and etnies rider Mike Brown is back and kicking ass with a second place overall.

A Day At The Compound

Twitch Spinnin' a 360
Garland

Yesterday afternoon I loaded up my camera gear while Garland and Ox loaded up their dirt bikes (I’m pathetic) and headed out to Deegan’s house to shoot some photos and video of the donkeys practicing. Garland, OX, Fluffy and Urek were all there sessioning the ramps and Kinnaird and Twitch were trying 360’s and barrel rolls into the foam pit.

It was Kinnaird’s first ever go at the foam pit and the first couple times went alright, but on his third barrel roll attempt he bailed from the bike and the bike landed on him burying him head first six feet deep in foam. Dayne ended up walking away a little dazed and with a sore ankle but still very alive. The lesson of the day is foam pits, though soft and cooshy, can still be hurt and possibly KILL you.

Twitch was having a better time in the foam and was almost pulling around his opposite spin inverted “Twitch-whip” style 360’s. Give Twitch a couple more days spinning into the foam and he will have them down to perfection and onto dirt in no time.

Deegan, Faisst, Potter, Scummy and Manley are out of town filming for a future episode of Viva La Bam. No details as of yet, but they are F-ing sh!t up and we will have a story and photos up when they get back.

Trigger Sets The World Record!

Posted by: Cropley | Monday, May 16, 2005
<---------------------------------------------277'---------------------------------------->>>

CRUSTY DEMON, CALIFORNIAN TRIGGER GUMM, JUMPS THE WORLD’S LONGEST OUTRIGHT DISTANCE ON A MOTORBIKE SETTING A NEW WORLD RECORD WITH HIS 277.5 FOOT FEAT

SIX NEW WORLD RECORDS SET AT THE GREATEST EXTREME EVENT EVER STAGED

Jumping a massive 277.5 foot (84.4m), California’s Trigger Gumm set a new world record tonight (Saturday May 14 ) for the longest outright distance jumped on a motorbike, clocking the world mark at the Crusty Demons Night of World Records at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway (Australia).

Trigger’s jump capped off a night of world records in the greatest extreme event ever staged. Capitalising on the perfectly still conditions that extended from the late afternoon into the night, six new world marks were set including Trigger’s outright record for the longest distance ever jumped on a bike; a 250cc distance world record for the grand daddy of the Crusty Demons, Larry Linkogle; and four records taken by Australians Robbie Maddison (Kiama) – longest trick and longest distance on a 125cc bike; Jamie Barkla (Toowoomba) longest distance on a quad; and Clint Debner (Penrith) longest distance on a pro mini bike.

But it was Trigger Gumm - the 37 year old operating engineer from California’s Orange County – that really set the 25,000 fans into a frenzy. Riding a Honda CR500, he left the kicker (ramp) at more than 85mph (140kph), flew as high as 80 foot and landed 277.5 foot (84.4m)on the 10,000 tonne mound of dirt.

It was the longest distance ever jumped on a motorbike, and will put Trigger Gumm in the Guinness World Book of Records. The previous official record was 253’ set by Jason Rennie from the UK in July 2000.

Trigger talks to Seth as he sizes up the 277' gap of death.

“That was mega gnarly, incredible. That was insanity at its finest. Everything about it was just danger,” said an elated Trigger after blitzing it at 277.5 foot.

“When I came up over the landing I knew I had it. Ten foot out, I knew I was basically so high, coming down with such velocity, every muscle in my body clenched up and I prepared for a very very hard landing.

“It was a bitch when I landed. I’m not going to be able to walk tomorrow.

“I couldn’t have gone any further than that without crashing – there’s nothing left.”

The jump was Trigger’s fourth and final attempt of the night in what was a world record long distance showdown between Trigger and his training friend and fellow Californian, Larry Linkogle.

Linkogle jumped four jumps, his best a 255.4 foot distance on his KTM 250. He could not better Trigger’s mark for the longest outright distance – but finished the night a happy man, knowing he had clocked the furthest distance ever jumped on a 250 cc bike.

Trigger worked up to the his final effort, setting a 227 foot jump, then a 251 foot jump and then a third jump that nearly went terribly wrong. Over eager, Trigger started his jump before the crew cued him, and on coming into land nearly hit the MC who had to duck to miss Trigger.

“I was in the air and I saw him(the mc), and I had to lift everything I could to miss him,” said Trigger.

Shaken, Trigger nearly renigged on his final jump, but gathered his senses and went for the attempt that scored him the world record with a final length of 277.5’.

The Crusty Demons Night of World Records was overseen by officials from the Guinness Book of Records, with all six attempts being approved for Guinness inclusion.

Congrats Trig!

Supercross in V-Town! Reed Wins!

Posted by: Cropley | Monday, May 9, 2005

6am Fri.
-Last night, after the etnies Cinco de Mayo celebration, I finally decided to make the trip out to Las Vegas for the final round of Supercross. I secured a ride in ESPN TV dork Cameron Steele’s super duty and was set to leave at 5:00am. So here I am, Friday morning, half hung over and half pumped up for the V-town debauchery, doing 95 mph down the toll road to the 91 freeway and texting this message to myself while Cameron is getting his beauty rest. Viva Las Vegas!

Peggy Sue's diner

8am Fri.
-We just stopped by Peggy Sue's diner for some breakfast just outside Barstow on historic Route 66. We beat the traffic on the dreaded 91 and are on schedule to make the press conference where etnies team rider Chad Reed will no doubt announce that he is gonna deal a smakdown to the other riders in Vegas..... we need to be there at noon, hope we don't get distracted…

The road to the bunny ranch.

10:30am Fri.
…we spotted a huge distraction that took a lot of will power to not turn off the 15 freeway. Just 50 miles to the north off this sign is Pahrump, home of the chicken ranch and where prostitution is legal! But we have a press conference to be at so the chickens will have to wait 'till we are back in town for the Best in the DesertVegas to Reno” off-road race.

Afternoon Fri.
-We hit up the press conference and listened to everyone talk some shit and then got some lunch and beers at the local dive casino bar and lost some cash at the black jack table. Later all the factory riders had a press day practice session. Reed and Bubba looked fast and had some good practice battles. It will definitely be between those two in the main.

Friday night!
-After checking in at the Hard Rock and getting a bite to eat we went to the MGM to test out our Texas Hold'em skills from watching the world series of poker on TV. I definitely got in over my head at the 2-5 no limit table. I thought I was going to kick ass with a high two pair of ace and eight after the flop so I went all in. Some old guy called with a five and nine off suit and got a six and seven on the turn and river for a straight. WTF! The same old man got out Cameron and some friends by calling their $500+ all in bets before the flop with something like 7-2 off suit and drew a full house. Phil wouldn’t have approved of that, but it worked.

We left with our tails between our legs and bummed a ride to the Crazy Horse. I love strippers! I tried to get some photos but bouncers at strip clubs hate cameras and camera phones. At least I tried. But I swear this hot blonde really wanted me. Crystal, if you’re reading this, call me.

Way too early Saturday morning
-I should have slept in but I fought back and still went to the stadium to check out practice and roam the pits. Most of the day was spent looking for good shade to watch practice and nap in. I finally found the etnies "keg on wheels" in the dirt parking lot buried behind a thousand other RV’s and trailers. Didn’t have much time to hang out, but I got a couple pics before the races.

The track has a cool start that is outside the stadium and has two paths that wrap around and meet in the stadium. The dirt is really hard packed and slippery and gets blue grooved quickly. The whoops are gnarly and people are having trouble with them. Again, Reed was really fast and was only matched by Bubba.

Saturday night.
<< Miss Supercross 2006 was crowned tonight by text message votes from the crowd. Brittney, Miss Phoenix took the win, and I will take a little credit for that because I voted for her at least 30 times and she won by about that many votes. I really believe she was the best candidate for the job because she actually rides dirt bikes which is really cool and well, she is smoking hot. Only problem…she wasn’t wearing etnies. We can fix that. Brittney, if you’re reading this, text me babe.

The 125 main saw a huge pile up on the first lap which took out Ivan Tedesco and etnies rider Joaquim Rodriguez. Bikes and bodies were flying and when the dust settled Joaquim was out cold on the ground. He suffered a concussion but should be fine for the nationals. Millsaps ran away with the 125 shootout and etnies pro Josh Grant came in third.

Windham down in the whoops.

The 250 main went like this - Chad Reed did not get a very good start and Windham was out front. By the time Reed picked through the pack to second place, Windham had already opened up a lead the length of a whole section of track. Not fazed by this, Reed turned on the after burners and turned the ten second deficit into a win. Reed was right on his fender through the whoops with a couple laps to go when Windham went down handing Reed the win and Carmichael second.

Mike LaRocco didn't race the Vegas finale because of a shoulder injury. See what caused the injury here.

Longboarding never looked so good!

This girl isn't an etnies model. Perhaps she just likes the shoes. Perhaps the photographer liked the way the pink and black colorway went with her outfit. Unfortunately, if I showed you the rest of the photos I'd lose my job. But they were emailed to me, so that means they must be on the web somewhere!

Check out the new photo gallery with some shots of Garland practicing at Costa Mesa and Potter going nuts at the compound. There is also a crazy sequence of an unknown rider casing the speedway jump, causing a compound fracture of his leg.

LaRocco Sits Out Final Round in Las Vegas

ANAHEIM, Calif., (May 3, 2005) – A minor mistake in golf and you run the risk of getting a soaker as you try and fish your ball out of a pond. In baseball it’s an "error." Tennis? A "fault."

Make that minor mistake in supercross and you’re out cold, scarily motionless. Once awake and back to your hotel room you’re unable to sleep due to extreme nausea, starting the next day in so much pain that it hurts just to breathe.

It was, without a doubt, one horrific moment last Saturday for Team AMSOIL/Factory Connection/Chaparral/Honda’s Mike LaRocco at Houston’s Reliant Stadium. LaRocco, battling for position in a heat race No. 2, had a slight lapse in judgment and came up short on a triple jump. The ensuing crash pummeled the veteran rider’s head into the face of the of another jump, knocking him unconscious for more than half a minute and injuring his shoulder. ("One of the shoulders I've had surgery on," joked LaRocco.)

Dry sense of humor still very much intact, LaRocco was in fairly good spirits on Monday despite the carnage. He explained he has what physicians refer to as a “Level 3” concussion. But he's not really sure of the extent of his shoulder injury because, again joking, "I'm too sore to lift my arm yet."

So, because of the concussion and doctors orders, no riding for two weeks – which means LaRocco won’t boot up and race this weekend at the THQ/AMA Supercross Series’ final event at Las Vegas' Sam Boyd Stadium. Noteworthy in the final race is that, heading into Houston, LaRocco had a comfortable 18-point lead over rival David Vuillemin for fourth overall in the 250 class standings. LaRocco’s DNF meant that Vuillemin closed the lead to two points, 229-227, and looks like he will most certainly overtake LaRocco for the fourth o/a spot in the 250 class this weekend.

“You know, for me to worry about 4th or 5th, the risk versus reward is just not worth it,” he said. “David (Vuillemin) and I ended up racing against each other quite a bit this year and I was fortunate to be out in front of him almost every time.”

LaRocco winds up in fifth place overall. Is he pleased with that?

“Honestly, it’s a pretty unsettling season,” he explained. “I know from the beginning of the year where I wanted to be – and that’s pretty far apart from where I wound up. I’ve had a hard time coming to terms with that I’m just not fast enough anymore.”

So does this mean “The Rock” won’t be returning for the supercross season next year?

Added LaRocco with a smile: “Gives me something to do over the summer I guess.”

Stay tuned...

Houston Supercross

Posted by: Cropley | Monday, May 2, 2005

The Houston Supercross went down this weekend as scheduled and it was Bubba who came out of it with the win. In 250 heat one Chad Reed and Bubba were battling back and forth for a few laps pushing each other to a blistering pace when Reed went down trying to go inside on Bubba. Bubba ended up going over the bars in the whoops a couple turns later and was forced to qualify in the semi. Reed recovered and got second behind Windham for a spot in the main event.

In the 250 main it was Bubba, Reed and Carmichael up front from the start. Reed was right behind Bubba and ready to battle it out with him but Chad’s pace got slowed down a bit from Carmichael challenging for second. By the time Reed had opened a gap on Carmichael he was already too far behind Stewart to make up the gap. Chad got second.
